Welcome to the

Tinshemet  Cave

Project

About The Project

Tinshemet Cave is a Middle Paleolithic site in Israel. Over the past nine seasons of excavations, a unique combination of finds has been uncovered, including articulated human remains, lithic artifacts, ochre remains, animal bones, evidence of fire use, and other significant discoveries.

Our excavation project aims to determine which Homo species inhabited Tinshemet Cave and to study their behaviors—both technological and symbolic. This project is led by the Laboratory for the Study of Human Cultural Evolution at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
